Among 10" speakers, there is one which seems to give good results : the Eminence Ragin Cajun. I have a friend who tested it against a Celestion G10 Vintage to upgrade a Harley-Benton GA15 valve amp, and preferred the Eminence.

Thanks Didier, that's the one I have, I bought it seven years ago to use in my Vox ADT30 and I bought one also for my Fender Superchamp XD. Great sounding speaker and a big improvement on those particular amps. :)

dave robinson wrote:Well I do have some spare speakers Dick, 10" and 12". There's even a spare JBL120f and an Electrovoice 150 watt Boogie speaker doing nothing in the garage, but won't they be too much for the 4 watt amp to drive ? I have a quality 10" in my Vox Valvetronix that would slot into the cabinet. I would expect more clarity if I were to change, do you think this would be the case ? :)

My ac4 head drives a Tayden 100w 12" speaker cab very comfortably, so as long as you don't stray below 8ohm impedance almost anything will be fine.

The 10" Eminence you have in the Valvetronix Dave is the obvious place to start with the advantage of it being very efficient & dynamic you will hear a clear difference.
From a better speaker I would expect more bass extension & better overall "clarity" & possibly better "dynamics" depending on the way the speaker is constructed & how efficient it is.
Be interested to hear what you think of the different speakers you try.

I really want something that woud fit straight in and at the moment it looks like I'll steal the speaker from the VT. ;)

I'll try something after Dave has experimented and given his feedback

Don't hold your breath Bill, I'm busy over the weekend with band stuff and hospitals all day Monday, it's won't be until at least Tuesday before I get some 'me' time to play around with this - that's if nothing else crops up family wise. If you have a plan get on with it. :)

Hope all goes well with the weekend and hospital appointment. Waiting for you was a bit tongue in cheek. I am pretty happy with sound as is but many on the web are recommending 8 ohm and upgrading the speaker and as you state putting in an expensive speaker sort of defeats the object. Why I was trying to link the 10" and 12" was to see if it would increase the tonal range.

Using a 10" & 12" speaker in the same cab is quite common & does have advantages but having them linked in separate cabs may not work as well............but there's no reason why you can't try it & see what happens

I might have an hour on Sunday to try a quality speaker with the AC-4, I'll let you know if I think it's worth it. To do it with a new speaker you're jacking up the cost at least £65 which goes against the budget thing. However if it gives the amp some extra clean headroom and makes it useable in small venues then it could be worth it. With the stock speaker I don't see it being up to it from what I've heard.
Going onto the twelve inch speakers, I always found the JBL that I have too clean, so that might be interesting, it's currently in a cabinet on it's own so would be easy to hook up. The EV speaker needs to be mounted so that will be the last port of call. :)

Not going to change my speaker now just wire the two amps up in stereo. Has anyone bought a two tone one yet?
