Hi Spike you get a great sound from the TVS3 through a Vox Tonelab. I could hardly tell it from the original. And of course the playing was spot on. All the best. Phil
Well played and superb sound as usual. You three guys down there always get an excellent recorded sound.
I'm interested in your recording techniques - I put my TVS3 through two Fender Super Champ amps and, live, I get a very authentic reproduction of most of the classics. However, when I record direct into my Tascam 8 track the sound is very different - a bit tin bucket. Any advice?
The idea is to keep it simple and record it normal and EQ it after if needed. Thats what Malcolm Addey did for The Shadows. Hank's recorded sound was EQ'd after the recordings and thats what we do.
If you have too many elements in the mix you can over process your sound. If your Tascam is preventing your natural sound from coming through, I would try another option. The best way to record and unlike the way I have done it here is to use a good class A valve amp miked up. Go Guitar >TVS3 > amp/mic. > PC. You can use cool edit pro or anything decent as your recording software. You will then need a couple of plug ins which you can download for free.
If you want a reasonable sound like the one here, just replace your amp for a tonelab or Line 6 Pod 2, etc....
Paul will also guide you with your settings once you decide what you want to do.
PS: Strings that work well are Elixir nanoweb 12 -52 and for some tunes 11 -49s
I really should find an alternative to the Tascam - it's never really reproduced the sound I get live. Trouble is, it took me long enough to master that recorder - you're hearing from someone who's only just learnt how to use a push button phone!
Thanks for the advice anyway.
I agree with 12-52s - use them all the time, but DRs.
Thanks very much for your kind comments! Its really appreciated!
Terry: If you ever want any help on settings just send me an email and we can discuss. I can also check with Gary and Paul to get their opinion on any problem areas. BTW: I had a Tascam a long time ago and gave it to a friend of mine as I found it was muffling my sound. Maybe I used it incorrectly but after 12 months of frustration I got rid of it. I also bought a snake charmer pedal for compression and that too muffled my sound so I let go of it. I should have tried it on stage but decided not to per sue that project.
I found keeping it simple was the answer. I mean thats what Hank did wasnt it?
Lovely to hear from you and thanks for commenting! I think you inspired me to use my tonelab again as you were getting great results yourself.
Its a matter of sitting down and tweaking until you get the settings right. I found the Gain and Variable gain buttons needed a fair bit of patience. I mean thats my amp setting basically sorted now but my underlying sound comes from my echo machine.
