South - By Neil LeVang

Postby Rjanuarsa » 26 Feb 2014, 13:44

I thought I'd share my version of "South" based on the version of Neil LeVang. He played this brilliantly on Lawrence Welk show back in the 50's or early 60s.
Not Shadows type but very nice early Fender sound.

I hope you enjoy it!

Regards,

Robby

Some really good old fashioned pickin' there Robby - very good indeed and as you said, a nice early Fender sound.

Very good Robby.
Just a hint of tremolo and so very reminiscent of those early guitar instros.
To my shame I dont know who the guy was but its a great recording by you.
Loved the Strat. 62 Re-Issue?
cheers

Thanks Phil! You got great Modern Hank's sounds too.

Hi Ian,

Absolutely right! There is a little bit of tremolo and also very little echo for extra warmth.

Many people don't know Neil LeVang as he was more of session guitarist rather than an artist. Great guitar player. He is now 82 years old.

The guitar I am playing is American Vintage '59 Strat that I got for Christmas. This one is a replica of later 1959 where Fender transitioned to Rosewood fingerboard (which I love!). Great guitar! all hardware, pickups, etc are very detailed and period correct. Highly recommended.

Robby

What a refreshing sound, Rockabilly. Vibrolux and slapback echo. Perhaps a little more delay on the slapback.

G'day Robbie from John in Adelaide, love that stuff.

It's only in recent years that I've seen YouTube clips from the Lawrence Welk show of Neil and Buddy Merrill- as far as I know that TV show wasn't shown in the UK in the '50's when I was young, nor here in Australia from when I came here in the early '60's...great players, great sounds and all those lovely sounds and playing!

That's how Fenders should sound!

Good on ya mate!

G'day John,

Nice to hear from you!

I came across Lawrence Welk show on youtube recently also, and was immediately struck by how good Neil LeVang was. Buddy Merrill is another great player. Multi talented. Their accuracies are second to none makes it even harder to copy :)

Thanks again mate!
