I'd take a guess at a Teisco.

Hi Eugene,

It's a rare Teisco T60 (a predecessor to the very common T64).

The "Monkey Grip" is just visible under Glen's right forearm.

That guitar sounds much better than I would expect a Teisco to sound. They were never imported to the UK under that name, but many turned up under different names. Two I recall were "Kent" (imported by Jennings) and "Stanley". They were widely regarded as poor quality, but clearly, Glen's was a better-made guitar.

Hi JN,

Teisco practically saturated the US market during the 60s. I think they were producing about 20 models a year and selling them by the thousand, either under the brand "Teisco del Ray" or through the Sears Catalogue where they were branded "Silvertone" (I think). Almost every US guitarist that couldn't afford a Fender must have bought one.

I agree that the T60 we're discussing must have been a bit special. I've never seen a real one --- just three photos. The Glen Campbell one featured in almost all of his TV performances in the early 60s.

The guitar didn't sound better because it was made better than others of its' type- it sounded good because Glen Campbell was playing it!!!

I've seen Glen's show live here a few years ago, and he was and is a fantastic player.

(Old anecdote, courtesy of country hot guitar picker Marty Stuart. Marty was in a studio in Nashville watching Chet Atkins cut a track. After Chet finished Marty said to him:

'Wow Chet, that Gretsch sounded fantastic!'

Chet looked at him, then pointed at the guitar, now sitting on a guitar stand. Then he said:

'How does it sound now?'..........)

It's a real pity that Glen Campbell is now suffering from Alzheimers, although he's still apparently able to tour in a limited way.

That's a good point. I once worked on the same bill as Carl Perkins. I had a nice 61 tele, a Music man amp, effects rack etc and sounded just like I always do! Carl had a bog standard G&L asat and played through a Carlsbro Stingray Combo with a bit of reverb on and sounded -------- just like Carl Perkins. Amazing!!
