JMI or VOX ( vintage JMI ) amp

Postby hansaustria » 22 Nov 2009, 13:13

What`s in your opinion the better choice ? A vintage VOX ( JMI / copper panel / 1963 / 1964 top boost rear built in from the factory / blue speakers ) or a AC 30 /4 or 6 out of the new ampline of JMI.

Does anybody have experiences with both types of amps?

Regards
Hans

I have no experience of JMI amps - though Robbo has. I have used a '64 Top Boost (grey panel, and silver alnico speakers) for almost ten years. It has a wonderful sound, but in order for it to be reliable, many of the small components - capacitors and resistors - have drifted out of specified values as a result of age and heat. These have been replaced with highest quality modern components... so you need to factor this work into your costs...

And the sound? Still wonderful...

The JMI company are no longer using the Celestion blue speakers as they are saying the later ones are not good. According to a pal of mine who is a recent customer of theirs, they have moved over to Tayden speakers as standard equipment.

Hi,

Celestion Blues were made in England, the Vox branded ones are made in China,
I wonder if all production has now moved to China?

Or perhaps JMI are buying the Chinese ones!

I know that people say that the Vox Chinese Celestions are not as good
as the English Celestion branded Celestions.

Hmmm! :?

If there's a difference between the original Blues and the Chinese it's not much at all the Heritage range is a good example. I saw a Utube comparison some time back and I could not really tell much difference.

I have a Heritage AC15 with a Celestion Blue and it sounds terrific. I haven't checked whether or not the the speaker is a UK built one, but it sounds good to me. The Shads amps for the tour are fitted with Taydens.

I too have the Heritage AC15, & it sounds superb, whether or not the speaker was made, it's a good 'un. I would venture to say that without that speaker, it would sound somewhat different, & probably not so good. I don't worry about it being Chinese.

Tony.

Hi, If I was paying a lot of money for an amp I would not want a chinese speaker, I would want a made in england speaker. I am pleased that JMI are using Tayden speakers and making an all british amp. The shadows used JMI amps on their tour with cliff, good on em.
