I have a Vox Short Tom which works great..as long as I
wrap the tape around the Pinch Roller as shown here.
From pics I have seen, this does not seem to be the correct setup for the
tape which it appears should go between the Pinch Roller and Motor
Capstan.
However, when I set it up that way, there is no echo, just a dry signal.
I have spliced the tape lengths to compensate for both methods but
only the first way works.
Any ideas Chaps?
Cheers...George.

What that suggests to me is that the tape is remaining stationary when threaded via the pinch wheel. (Which is the correct way of threading). Try cleaning both the motor shaft & rubber pinch wheel with spirit.

George.

I have seen several pics showing the tape out around the rubber wheel.

The tape should run clockwise.

If the tape runs anticlockwise the tape is recorded on and immediately wiped.

The long tom is threaded as per your second way.

Good luck

The tape will be running the wrong way if you thread it as per your second picture. It must go around the outside of the rubber wheel (but could still go under the drive spindle first)

Now I’m doubting my memory, it’s a good 50 years since I had one!
