Flatwound or Roundwound. A thank you to Paul Rossiter

I just came across this wonderful video put together by Paul Rossiter of TVS. It answered so many questions I had and made my study of the subject look truly amateurish! (Which it was!). Paul (being the scientist he is) was truly methodical and careful. And his other videos and explanations have been so carefully put together as well. Thank you, Paul. Your effort is truly appreciated.

I know a few guitarists in France who use d'Addario ECG25 12-52 flatwound strings.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for those kind comments, it's nice to hear when someone finds the topic as interesting as I did. While we will never know for sure what was used back in the early days it was fun to explore the possibilities.

If you can, having both flatwound and roundwound strings is the way to go since they both offer something different in trying to replicate the original sounds of the different eras. As I discuss in the video, I found that I could only get very close to Hank's sound of the very early era with either flatwound or very dead roundwound strings. In later eras, the brighter roundwound strings were almost certainly used.

Hi Dave,

Sorry to hear that it is blocked in Japan, I didn't think that the copyright Mafia would worry about such short extracts but I guess it is all done by algorithms now that don't discriminate. Are any of the other videos blocked?

Maybe a VPN would get around the problem? If not, I might be able to put it on a DVD or thumb drive. I'll investigate.

D'Addario Half Rounds are worth consideration. They are something between round and flat wound and sound good.
