Yes, apparently Music retailers of the day described Leo Fender's first guitar, eventually known as the Telecaster, as a plank or canoe paddle because it was so basic & simply made, & lacked all the refined finishing of the established big-bodied, hollow jazzers that were played by all the big band guitarists of the early fifties.
