Vintage Vox AC302 Amplifiers

Postby UKFenderbender » Thu Apr 12, 2018 2:48 pm

Hi Guys

I wonder if you can help me

I have two vintage Vox ampifiers

1. Vox AC30 Guitar amplifier (JMI 1964)
2. Vox AC30 Top Boost (Dallas Arbiter 1974)

I have had static and low grade interference problems through the speakers

It seems to emanate from the volume & tone potentiometers

These are rotary potentiometers and are totally enclosed with small square holes cut near their bases

I have read literature about spray cleaners with & without lubricant like Deoxit D5 & Deoxit D100 and the DEOxit linear pot cleaner, but unsure what the best cleaner for these vintage amps would be

I have replaced two volume controls but don't think these are bad enough to replace yet

I would truly appreciate your advice and recommendations please, as I do not want to destroy them as one is 40years old and the other 50 years old

Kindest Regards

Colin Wade

The spray cleaner in common professional use is "Servisol" in an aerosol can with a little plastic pipe for directing the spray precisely.

I have used it on guitars, amplifiers and effects pedals over the years. It works very well, with no ill effects that I have ever experienced. The point is not to use a cleaner which contains oil (such as WD40, whose package resembles Servisol).

Servisol is ideal for these type of pots.
