Those results certainly suprise me, I can't for the life of me get my eTap to sound as bad as any of those. :| There is a distinct lack of bite and quality of tone - disappointing.

I have to agree with you Dave.
There's no substitute for standing in front of the things being compared.
Computer recording and playback depends upon so many variables and types of equipment.
You have to witness the valve unit at a volume to appreciate it.

I have to say that I consider this poll to be complete nonsense.

Hmmm

3 different sound files.....a poll to see which one is preferred.....a result obtained that did not surprise me but seems to have others

Does it matter that the "tone" of the published files is not to a certain standard ? To me it was clearly a comparison of 3 different "machines" within clearly defined recording parameters, nothing more or less

Harsh words from Eric & Dave ................ or am I missing something here ?

Strange world sometimes this Shadows music :?

Dick.

'clearly defined recording parameters'

But most certainly not 'clearly defined playback parameters '

So I suppose Dave wasted his time recording the samples of one of your early units, Ecca?

hello Phil, :D

about the demos, I have checked your settings on the etap2HW, echomatic 2 Classic, wet/dry is 5 ( repeats are irritating)
my advice is to put that on 2. (much better) ;)
as you know on the original track of the shads you dont hear any repeats, because a drum echo was used.
Its all about the heads 1,2,3 those are working on the wet/dry knob if using program 5 as you know.
----------------------
about your sound:
I have seen that you have a lot of work on the demos,,,,,,,my compliments, but I gess you are using to much computerstuff.
if using a equalizer take a analoque one.

all the best, tonio 8-)

Phil, as I see it,the only thing you've not done is to run your exercise past the stake holders first to see if they approve of your methods. ;)

I see you've been a member since 2010, so you'll have picked up in that period that only one or two people can speak in what is called a 'straightforward manner'

The eTAPHW is a very good echo further developed by Eric Thacker, as great advocate of the VST world of production by PCs as I am and as an aside, who introduced the concept of the PSP608 and eTAP Engineer to him? I did. Yeh

Grrrrrreat

@tonio,

Thanks for your constructive comments which I greatly appreciate.

The purpose of the test was not to match the 'correct echo' of the original recording, nor indeed to try to get the 'correct tone' of the original recording but simply to compare three different eTap2HW units that I have built and see which sound most people preferred. They were never asked "which sounds most like the record" and I'm sorry that some may have thought that was the question!

Regarding the echo setting used, the story there is that, as an owner of a Zoom RFX2000 with Charlie Hall's EFTP, the recommended patch for Theme for Young Lovers is the same as the patch for Atlantis. Consequently I based the test on the 'Atlantis' settings suggested by Dave Robinson in an earlier post, though as Dave said at the time 'they are not set in stone' - viewtopic.php?f=74&t=8228#p58064

I will give your settings a try and let you know how it sounds to me.

Regards,

Phil.
