This is terribly sad news.
It was only at the last meeting that I heard how ill he was.
His family has our deepest sympathy.

That is a terrible shock.
John was a lovely man, calm and unflappable, taciturn but always ready with a well-placed and appreciated quip.
He will be sorely missed by all those who knew him, but especially by those close to him, to whom one only extend sincere condolences.
