The very first note of' ' Dance on', the open E, is a tremelo dip and there is a sort of 'knocking' sound (the only way i can describe it!) anybody know how Hank got that sound?

Hi ! Mike.
I also love "That tone"very much from childhood.
I wood called it as "Milky sound".
Why don't use heavy gauge E.
I will recommend D'Adarrio 0.011~0.050

Could it be the drums rather than the guitar that makes the sound you refer too ?

YES ! YES ! YES !
There is a nice snare sound by Brian Bennett.
I've forgot it.
I remember the same cool beat of intro on " Foot Tapper ".
Those are great.
Best regards.
