I have a number of amps, all of which I use in conjunction with a Quadraverb GT with EFTP and a Line 6 Pod X3 Pro, usually set up to model a Vox AC 30.

My main amp is an Atomic 50/112, basically a valve power amp. Very loud, extremely good for Shads instrumentals.

A Peavey Escort PA. Solid state 75W per channel. This is the amp I use for BTs, but I use it for guitar, too, when space is restricted. Very good for Shads Instrumentals.

A Fender PowerStage 100 monitor/general purpose amp. Solid state 100W. Also used for BTs and guitar instead of Peavey when space is most critical. Very good for Shads instrumentals.

Now, I've always greatly preferred valves to solid state but I have to be honest and say that though my Atomic just has the edge, the two solid states are very nearly as good and I'm pretty sure the punters wouldn't notice the difference.

So, it's all down to the Quad and the X3 Pro. These are what are actually producing the tone and it begs the question (and I hate to say this), if you are using a modeller, does it really matter whether you are running into a valve or solid state amp?

Discuss!

I think that's pretty much what I was saying.

How many out there own or have owned, a VOX CAMBRIDGE 30? These were made in South Korea and now discontinued. They were one of the best sounding Vox amps oin the lower price bracket. I own one.

I love my Marshall JTM60 all valve but when at the Hankies I will use the little Ampworks and it really doesn't matter what I go into I usually get a good sound after a bit of tweaking.

I'm starting to love my Cube 40XL and got a really fabulous tone with it using Charlie Hall's 'Atlantis' patch with neck pickup on the Zoom G2.1Nu yesterday when trying out 'Blue Sky, Blue Sea, Blue Me'. It's not really like the tone on the original recording but I absolutely love this setting and only hope I'll be able to reproduce it next time. Lately I seem to be having a lot more success with the settings but am still not really sure what I'm doing when I get it right. :)
best wishes

Hi how are you ? when i play Blue Sky Blue Sea Blue Me i use the Alantis patch as well sounds great to me .I try not to copy Hank but to play the all the songs as me playing a Shadows tune .I find i use 4 settings when playing live 1, Sleepwalk 2, Apache 3,Atlantis and a slapback country echo together with an overdrive over any of those settings

Great playing and good luck

The Atlantis patch seems a very good all round patch for me too. I really hope I can replicate the tone from the other day once I can play it better as I recorded it then as a test and for the first time since I started learning a year ago, I actually enjoying listening to it because of the tone. Unfortunately it has messy double stops and I stumbled over the notes 2nd time round in the key change but the rest of it sounded nice I thought. :)
Sometimes I'm really very happy with the tone now although I think it has a bit more 'bite' and is not as refined as many covers I've heard - but actually I quite like that - as long as there's enough resonance and echo.
Best wishes
Rosemary
