Thick Hank?

Postby John M » Tue May 11, 2010 7:27 pm

Listening to Hank PLays Live I am intrigued how he got that "thick" sound to his playing.
I believe at this time he was still using quadraverb Q20's, so I dont put it down to that...that being basically just an echo unit.
I think I detect a slight amount of drive in the sound.. was it that? .. or was it some clever EQ?

Hank was using Roland RE-301s for echo at that time. At times during HPL I can detect a touch of chorus in his sound, which would thicken the sound straight away. Also, he was using the DiMarzio FS-1 as his bridge pickup, which is a notoriously fat sounding pickup (in fact, I believe the letters "FS" stand for "Fat Strat".) Add to all this the amp settings he would have personally chosen, and there's your answer.

HTH...
