One of my (unsuccessful) attempts to get close to the original sound:

Not unsuccessful at all, Wolfgang. Think you're in the ball park with that. Many of the elements are there.

Did you make your own backing? If so, and if possible, I would change the bass guitar strings to flatwound to get closer to the Rostill sound. I'd also pull the piano a bit further back in the mix. The drums are great. But these are hypercritical observations. Basically, what you've done there is darn good.

Hope you don't mind me saying that!

Iain

Just to throw my hat in to the mix, a couple of snippets I did with my ESE. I realigned the heads to the pattern of the longtom on slow mode (heads 2, 4, 5, 6) one is feedback from head 5 the other from head 6.

Thanks for your tips, Iain. I made my backing with software instruments in Logic, even the rhythm guitars, based on MIDI files from the internet. Unfortunately, the intro already sounds different from the original, and the Logic library does not contain a flatwound bass.

Only the lead guitar is not virtual (my Burns Bison 64), but sent to an amp plugin (Logic "British Combo") and the "EchoCat" tape delay plugin. So I can change the settings even after recording.

That is seriously clever, Wolfgang!

Heard your files now thanks, Scott. Let’s see what the experts say.

Hi Wolfgang,

That's very interesting you are using the Echo Cat plugin, I looked at this and tried the demo, but the continuous cutting out and nag screens make it so difficult to evaluate properly.

If I may ask, have you used other plugin echoes and how this compare generally?

Regards

Gary

Hi Gary,
there's a tape delay in Logic, but it has no multitap option. I used the Roland RE201 plugin in GuitarRig by connecting two of them in parallel as it only has two heads. I like the EchoCat better, it has three full adjustable heads and a wide range of adjustment options. Stereo effects are also possible.

Hi Wolfgang,

Thank you very much for the information, at the moment I tend to float between EchoBoy and Overloud's Echoson, but I liked what you were getting from it and might well just give it a punt!
