Who's back...

Postby drakula63 » Sat Apr 23, 2011 8:38 am

The new series of Doctor Who starts this evening at six o'clock on BBC1. Let's hope it's better than the last one - mind you, looking at the weather, I doubt that there'll be anyone inside to watch it!!! Even I might watch it later on the iPlayer. Nice to see there's a 15 minute tribute to Elisabeth Sladen on the CBBC channel afterwards.

Happy Easter.

Unfortunately it appears that Steven Moffat is still lead writer which means the incomprehensible drivel that was the last series is still there.

I was never a great fan of Russell T Davies' writing but I wish the BBC would bring him back now.

I'm sure the cast could be really good if they had a decent script to work from, but not this rubbish.

Watched the first ten minutes then, for one reason or another, switched off and watched it all much, much later on iPlayer...

It was OK, the aliens were really quite scary (in an 1960s, 'The Outer Limits' kind of way) but, as predicted, the 'story' was incomprehensible nonsense. I have been hugely disappointed by Steven Moffatt's efforts as head writer, as he seems totally incapable of actually telling a proper coherent story - and even with Doctor Who, this is what it's all about!!! What we get are a series of 'incidents', sensationalistic images and, it has to be said, some good visuals. And that's it. Yes, Matt Smith is great as the Doc, but poor old Karen Gillan cannot act; the guy who plays Rory is just too much of a dork to be a welome addition to the cast and River Song is just so tiresome.

I love Doctor Who, but I'm sorry to say that the wrong people have been in charge since it came back. Verity Lambert, Barry Letts, Robert Holmes, Philip Hinchcliffe -- now THEY were proper writers and producers!!! Thank goodness I decided to buy Planet of the Spiders on DVD to save the day! RIP Sarah Jane...

Isn't it always "incomprehensible nonsense" ??? :(

Bob

I'd love to have had the chance to debate this on Sunday, but we were preoccupied with other things!

i would certainly have leapt to the defence of Stephen Moffat (a local lad) who (IMHO) wrote the best single episode of the Tennat years (Blink) and contributed many other excellent stories. And Karen Gillan is rapidly becoming a (Scottish) National Treasure...

That said, Saturday's episode (watched chez Alan Taylor) was overly confusing and cluttered, despite have some nice line and interesting ideas.

Stetsons are cool...

Blink wasn't a bad script but since RTD was lead writer I suspect he had some say in it. It's only since the Matt Smith / Karen Gillan series that Steven Moffat has had a free reign. Pity because, as I said before, I think the cast have a lot of potential given a decent script.
