Derek,

If we had that scrappage system here where I live in South Australia, if it became compulsory rather than an incentive scheme, as in some countries, many of us would be walking...

Then again, I heard that you could go to dealers and pick up a VERY cheap banger from the large number of cars traded in on new ones- or are/were the car dealers forced or legally obliged to send the trade-ins to the wrecking yard?

If so, what a bloody waste...all the extra resources used in building new cars, and we could make better use of resources by repairing existing vehicles with a considerable life left in them.

My car is a 1983 model, which I bought very cheaply nearly 5 years ago...well, engine oil is cheap in the supermaket, innit?

It's worth noting that some companies, particularly one with a name like DROF, have increased their prices by about £2,000, which is somewhere around the scrappage value...........................Can you smell something like a rat?.............Or am I being cynical?
Let's face it, not everybody needs, or can afford, a new car. As far as I'm concerned, a new car is a bloody great waste of money.

Pat,

That's logical...

Here in Australia, the government subsidises conversion of petrol vehicles to LPG - the subsidy is $2,000 (about 1,000 quid)

The price of an average conversion used to be about $1,100- 1,800.

Since the subsidy started, the average price is now $2,200- you pay now pay the firm $200, and the conversion company applies for you, and it gets the two grand from the government...

Used to be called the thimble and pea trick... :(

How does the scheme work?

Are dealers legally obliged to send the traded-in cars straight to the scrap dealers or do they sell them off cheap 'round the back'?
