What is perhaps unusual is that the Fentones‘ The Mexican was popular here in Manila in the very early 1960s. We did not know them, as material was hard to find in those days, but teenagers knew the tune. In those days, amateur bands (we called them “combos”) played at parties and school events, usually for free. They would play Shadows and Ventures pieces, using the same instruments of course, and the odd numbers from bands such as the Fentones. We kids were just so excited to hear and see electric guitars.
Now, some 60 years on, I’m trying to play The Mexican.
