Hope this helps!

(Done without guitar to hand so I'll check it later in case it's not what I intended.!)

This melody has been and remains amongst my favourites.

Did The Shadows ever play it live? Not at any of the concerts in the UK that I attended.

Am I correct in thinking that it was released as a single in some countries, and got into the record charts?

Kindest regards,
Christopher

Here you go, Christopher. It is a much later version though, very different from the original.

The tune is very popular (probably the most popular Shadows piece) in Japan, which is Ventures country.

Wow, thanks Andy, that is brilliant.

As I never saw the Shadows on stage between 1962 and 1977(when they did a tour following the success of 20 Golden Greats); so until the internet and this forum came along, I missed a lot.

To my mind nothing beats getting a seat a few yards from a musician and seeing how they tackle a tune live on stage. I have noticed that whereas Hank sticks pretty much to the original record on Apache, on other tunes he will slip in the odd lick or different phrase i.e. Shazam or Shadoogie/Guitar Boogie. And of course most of their early TV shows were mimed.

Thank you again
Christopher

PS (as I believe you enjoy the Ventures?) have you seen the Suffrajettes (from Canada) on YouTube?

Correction that should be the Surfrajettes!!!!!!

Perhaps bit too left field for Surf Guitar fans (presuming they are out there), but IMHO full marks for stage presence!

It is only thanks to Facebook, YouTube etc that I, (as a fan of most guitar related matters) am starting to appreciate the surf music genre - fender jags and fender amps seem to lead the field - and those Japanese bands - their enthusiasm and attention to detail. Its been a long path from Bert Weedon and that chap in Lonnie Donegan's trio.

Kindest regards,
Christopher

ps sorry as I seem to have hijacked this thread!

The tune is in C# instead of C (and a little faster), maybe because of changed tape speed?

They played it live in Japan in 1967 (where it had been a hit independent of the album). A recording of the performance exists.

In C (or at least, dropped a semitone):
