EF86 Preamp...

Postby ernie1958 » Sun Nov 15, 2009 11:40 pm

8-) Hey all...just out of curiosity.. are there any other amplifiers besides the Vox AC15 that uses the EF86 preamp and EL84 output stage?
Maybe barking up a wrong tree here, but to my knowledge there should be others as well..for instance a Matchless is my guess.
My thought is if any other amps that can be compared with the same circuitry as the AC15,should theoretically produce the same sound as the Vox,
bearing in mind the speaker is of the same structure of course..

Some members with any ideas...? ;)

But you can add it to any EL84 based amp with Roger Allcock's Vintage unit which is a complete EF86 Vox front end in a little box wired direct to the power amp and transformer...

The original AC4 uses an EF86 and EL84.

I actually repaired a Marshall that had an EF86 unit fitted - boy was it bright!

I would like to get hold of one of Roger's units but have had no success with several email addresses. Can anyone help, please.
Incidentally, it was good to see David at Derby Shadows on Saturday(well alright not quite as good as seeing Licorice) with his new guitar which sounded pretty awesome.
Incidentally again, Licorice told me that Theme for Young Lovers was recorded with a Fenders and Atlantis with Burns!! I thought it was the other way round.

Blackstar amps do an Artisan Series which the 15 watt and 30 watters are ef86 on one channel and 12AX7 on another
Nice amps and handwired the second channel is in the realms of a Fender and a Marshall they say... nearly went and got one before I settled on my Vox Heritage AC30 ;)
