Fiesta Red

Postby Wilson » 02 Nov 2011, 12:18

Hi All,
I seem to remember that some time ago there was a discussion about this colour. I am hoping to restore and paint a body in Fiesta Red. All I remember of the colour discussed was that it was a Chevrolet from about 1956. I did find another reference in an ad which said it was a Ford colour used on a Thunderbird for 1 year around 1958. I would greatly appreciated any assistance in discovering the correct colour paint.
I am unable to purchase Aerosol type cans as apparently these cannot be sent through the post.
Thanks a lot.
Wilson.

Hi Wilson.
This site has always been a good starting point for Fender colours.http://home.provide.net/~cfh/fender.html

Whilst it is perfectly possible that those three colours were all marketed in Europe under the generic term "red" (which is how Selmer used to describe it), two of them are closer to Coral Pink than to Fiesta Red.

I'll post a picture (soon) showing two immaculate examples (one FR and one CP).

There is another problem : colour fades with time, depending on light (UV) exposure. The above samples have been made by a friend who worked in the paint business, and had access to the best professional tools to analyse and reproduce any colour. He also painted many guitar bodies for himself and friends !

Hi Wilson

This is the Fiesta Red forrmula DuPont paints sent me. It's slightly difficult to read as the formatting of the text hasn't copied very well. The original finishes were cellulose.

I have bought paint described as Fiesta Red from 2 different UK sources and whilst both were close to what I consider the correct shade they were both different!

And if you look at the latest batches of Mex Strats in Fiesta Red they look far more like Coral to me, very brownish and quite dull, whereas the Biffy Cliro Squier seems to match it very well.

Ford do a nice red which to me is like the Fiesta Red I remember. They use it on the new Ka model.
