The idea of using two electrolytic capacitors in series in the power supply section of the amp as Ecca has done has been successfully used by several manufacturers in the past.
As Ecca has pointed out, it's possible for any component to go out of spec and subsequently fail.

I've switched it on and off 12 billion times now and it's working OK.
