Where normally the echo knob
Should be
Any ideas what this modification is

Put simply, that knob is the echo volume control if I remember rightly. It is a push/pull control that activates the motor also. It is labelled Echo - Normal on the device.

Not exactly because, just before turning the volume Echo knob Ronnie changes the "song of the Echo" by pushing one of the four push buttons on the front panel...
So it seems that he get the Wonderful Land Echo song just by means of the Volume Echo knob, but in practice, and if it's right that he changes the echo Volume ! he changes also and mainly the number of playback heads which are "on"...
