Recording onto iPad

Postby Iain Purdon » Wed Feb 27, 2019 5:38 pm

This should be easy but it baffles me.

I have an iPad with a lightning socket but no headphone socket. I want to record audio from a sound mixer into the iPad through the lightning socket.

Can it be done? All advice gratefully received!

Thanks - Iain

I am relatively new to iPad recording, but I would think something like this: https://www.andertons.co.uk/recording/a ... -lightning
I use an iTrack Dock: https://itrack.focusrite.com/products/itrack-dock
There are probably others so I am sure there will be more suggestions.

Hi Iain.
What is the original source of the music going into the mixer. Is it a live sound or a sound file such as an MP3. It would help to know what equipment you have in addition to the iPad. A great source of info on music and the iPad is Pete Johns on Youtube.

As Ian said, if you intend to do a fair bit of music with the iPad then one of those bits of kit he suggested would be good. I use the Yamaha Steinberg UR22 Mk2 but the UR12 is good and a bit cheaper.

A point worth mentioning is that some interfaces don’t supply power to the iPad. The Focusrite Solo doesn’t, but the iTrack Dock does. This could be an issue when being used for lengthy sessions.

Thanks for thoughts so far, plenty for me to chew on. Please keep them coming!

This is for live performance with microphones plugged into a sound mixer. It could be a number of different mixers but they all have stereo ¼ inch jack output, which I want to connect to the iPad lightning socket as an input.

Many thanks - Iain

Ian,

I've just got a new iphone and I noticed the earphones came with a short adapter - 1/8 jack socket to lightning plug. I would imagine you can buy something similar quite cheaply.

Iain,

Len is quite right, there is a range of adapters that Apple supply for the Lightening connector. I think they cost around £35. But just to be sure you get the right one, I suggest popping into an Apple store and get some advice. The goys there are very helpful.

Thanks All

I have acquired a Line6 Sonic Port, as kindly suggested by Alan KcKillop. It comes with both Lightning and 30-pin connectors. I shall put it through its paces over the next few days.

All good wishes - Iain
