Numeric Sequence for posts?

Bob

Was wondering if the software enables subsequent posts to be numbered so that if replying to an earlier comment the number could be benefit - instead of agreeing with "David's earlier post xxx" it would be ... post #5 etc.

Just a thought - would be useful in very long exchanges?

Hmm, not as simple as I thought. I can get sequential post numbers but posts can be displayed in different orders and I need to account for that so that each post always has the same number. Then if a user deletes his post the remainder would get renumbered and references would make no sense.

There's always a way, but it will take a little longer than I'd hoped. Watch this space...

Ok, as you can see it works, BUT

It only displays the post number sequentially so if anyone views posts in anything other than the default (ascending by date) or if anyone deletes a post the post numbers won't be the same. I'll give it some thought as to how best to overcome this little problemette :?

I put the post number where it seems best placed. It can go literally anywhere. Anyone have a better idea, let me know.

Edit: Made a change to the mod

If the topic is sorted by date, either ascending or descending the post number will be correct. If sorted by author or subject all posts will be numbered 0. If a post is deleted the numbering will change. If a post or author is ignored post numbering should be ok.
