Demos of Sliders Pickups

Postby dave robinson » Tue Jun 15, 2010 1:04 pm

Hi Groovers,

As many of you will know, after I heard Phil Kelly's great demo of the Sliders pickups from Australia, I bought a set as I immediately recognised that they sounded ver very close to my treasured Masterbuilt 50th anniversary Strat which is mega expensive - by comparison these pickups are not - and have transformed my old Strat into a great sounding guitar once again, for just over £200.00. :D

For those interested, here are links to some demos using the said pickups.
I have done three different 'takes' of Apache, first of all using the expensive ESE Echomatic via the Vox AC15 Heritage, then the ESE through my 30watt Vox Valvetronix (VT30) and then using the Vox VT30 dry, but adding the Roland 201 echo position #5. I found it interesting to say the least, in as much that the guitar is dictating the sound, rather than the echo or the amp.

8-) Hi Dave,
Very good presentation of what these babys can do in an old Strat...
Your '63 Strat is probably the same as mine,so the Sliders would probably give me the same results if I put them in my '63 Strat.
But I listened to Phil Kelly's Frightened City demo with the Sliders in his Strat once again, only his Strat has a maple neck which
in my opinion gives a little more bite and "spank",if you know what I mean..
Would that be of influential importance on the overall sound of the Sliders you think?
Thanks for sharing the tunes you played Dave..

Regards,
Ernie

Thanks guys for listening and for your input.
Ernie, my '63 Strat currently has a birds eye maple neck fitted from Alan Brason, I'll refit the rosewood veneer neck and check it out, I guess it will sound warmer.

8-) Thanks Dave..looking forward to hearing the difference.. ;)
Btw...I've seen some of your playing with the Past Masters on Youtube...quite pleasing to see but I'm guessing the pups on your Strat in the vid
are the 57/62's which to me sound great as well..

Cheers,

Hi David,

I'm no expert on Strat pickups and don't even own a Strat but they sound good to me. I couldn't download the second file for some reason. Your playing was excellent as usual. Thanks for posting these test files. It sounds like you have yourself a good aquisition there.

Regards,
Len

Ernie, the Strat on the You Tube videos is my USA '62 Reissue, same as the one used by Colin Pryce Jones, the pickups on that one don't need replacing and are as close as it gets to what it was back then.
I'll check out the number two soundfile on 4 Shared, that would explain why there are several downloads of the other seven, but only two fo that track.
I don't expect everyone to hear what I can hear with these pickups, as some folks would say they sound like the 57/62's, but there is an improvement that is pleasing to my ears and it is more apparent in the 'feel' of the instrument as I play. The sound jumps out at me in the same way that David Martin's Masterbuilt 50th Anniversary did amongst 50 other Strats at our local club - I had to have one . . . . :D

OK Dave that's fair comment, only thing is if you took the trouble to read the thread then you would know that this Strat doesn't have the rosewood neck fitted, but a solid birdseye maple neck, intending to give the earlier sound.

Also, the Fender Strat pickups between 1959/1963 were unchanged, these being a perfect clone of that period.

I'm sorry you can't hear it, but I did say that not everyone would get it, I suppose it helps knowing what you're looking for, but I love them to bits which is really all that matters to me and going on the Emails and enquires it seems there are many admirers of Rod's work. Onward and upward . . . . :D
