Just a quick heads up, BBC4 is showing the Shadows at 60 once again this coming Friday 29th October at 9pm.

This is good news... but it sort of highlights the fact that it perhaps wasn't a good idea calling it 'The Shadows at 60'. It was really 'Apache at 60' anyway. A shame they couldn't have just called it 'The Story of the Shadows' or simply 'The Shadows'. Still, it's a great doco and always worth watching. Glad it's on again.

We all have degrees in hindsight. In defence of the programme maker, The Shadows first grabbed public attention by topping the charts in 1960, rather as the Beatles did in 1963. And broadcasters aim at the general audience rather than people like us!

There was the precedent of the one hour BBC radio documentary "Me And My Shadows" (TX BBC R2, 2 February 1998).

At the time, I thought it was a slightly misleading title, as it was not really sixty years of the Shadows as such. I'm sure one or two people did voice similar thoughts on here at the time. I'm also not sure that adding the '60 years of...' prefix would have got more people to watch. It was 'Apache at 60' if anything. I enjoyed the documentary, but I would dispute that the title was accurate or appropriate. I'd have called it "No Shadows... no Beatles"

I remember the BBC did a radio documentary in 1978, primarily to celebrate Cliff's 20th, but the Shadows featured too. I can't remember what it was called, but I think it was in several parts. They played Love De Luxe and Cliff was very enthusiastic about it. It was also on this programme that (I think) Bruce talked about getting the mobile studio in and recording Don't Cry For Me Argentina. Might be wrong about that. Also have fond memories of Cliff's Rock n' Roll Juvenile concert, which was recorded and broadcast on Radio 1, I think. Cliff and the Shads have a long history with the BBC.

It’s today
