The Shadows live on December 1st, 1990

Postby iefje » Tue Dec 01, 2020 11:20 am

Today it's exactly thirty years ago, that The Shadows played their last concert as part of their last 'regular' tour, which took place at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton. Did anyone on this forum attend the show on December 1st, 1990?

Not at the Mayflower but at the grand old age of 5 saw them with my dad and some of his friends at Croydon Fairfield Halls and at the RAH...hooked ever since.

Any video footage of the 1990 tour around anywhere? Would love to see it again.

Yes they did 2 consecutive nights as I recall and we went to them both.
At that stage there was no indication that there would not be another tour in 12 to 18 months as was the norm.
As I recall Bruce saying later he shook hands with Hank and Hank then went off to catch a plane at Heathrow to return to Australia.

I know there are some good bootlegs CD of the last show(before you ask no I can't provide).
I was at the RAH too and that was the second time I could fumble 34346....
They gave us 2004/2005/2009/10 as extra!

Yes I was there. There had been rumours amongst fans during that tour that Brian was leaving at the end of it, so that night will always stick in my mind. Even if Hank and Bruce were going to continue it felt like the end of an era, it was a strange feeling after that show that's for sure. Some time later when it became clear that the Shad's were no more did that night in Southampton take on greater significance. Thankfully we had the 2004/5 final tour and 2009 with Cliff, but December 1st 1990 was a pivotal moment.

Yes, I seem to remember reading here on the forum, that Clem Cattini was considered for replacing Brian, which of course never happened. Shortly afterwards in 1991/1992, Polydor/PolyGram and others suggested to Hank that he should try something different, which resulted in his fulltime solo career and put The Shadows' career on hold for the next decade.

I read that Hank wanted to branch out a bit so took 1991 off to write and then signed a 2 year deal with Polydor so there would have been no Shad's activity for at least 2 years, turned into 14!
I'm sure there's a photo of them walking off stage at the Mayflower.

I remember hearing that although I have no idea if its true or not. Maybe Hank did want to branch out but most of his solo albums could, in my opinion, have been recorded by the Shads. I wish that they had been.

I've got a photograph of the Shadows actually walking off the stage/taking their bows, at the end of this very concert! It was given to me by the photographer who took it. Brian signed it for me about seven years ago and I handed it to him and said "Can you remember where this was?" He looked at it for a second or two and then got it in one! I'll dig it out and post a copy. I posted it many years ago (circa 2000) on the previous forum BEFORE I got it signed, for those of you with long memories!
