I am new here so forgive me if this topic has been covered in the past. The "out there" solo on Man Of Mystery - was Hank having a laugh?

Try the Advanced search facility - top right immediately under the Search box.

Enter +man +mystery +solo and see what's been said about it.

Hope this helps - Iain

I've never noticed this what, one note imperfection? I spun the track Man Of Mystery after I bought the EP this track was included, that's it just up there. I guess that if I missed the fluffed playing the first time, then my brain probably just accepted this as part of the tune.

We do indeed accept it as part of the finished performance. At the time it was selected for release it will have been thought good enough and the sales will have justified the decision.
As I see it, the early Shadows were a driving force, characterised by energy, charisma and good tunes. Musicianship was above average but raw. Mistakes happened a lot, even in the chosen take. They didn't matter. Whereas the later Shadows were musically very polished, still with charisma, energy more under control, accuracy far better. Sales less high.
