Although not knowing exactly when the first album cover picture was taken, I imagine it is the same 'blond' Tele (supposedly borrowed by Bruce for the occasion), presumably just prior to delivery of the JMI set.

Even if the video were in HD and in colour, it wouldn't enable us to tell whether that Telecaster and the one on the cover of the first LP were the same one. Each image shows the Fender Standard Telecaster of the day: blonde finish, white pickguard, rosewood "slab" fretboard, even the tan-coloured Fender leather strap.

I had one of those AC 30 'TV FRONT' Amps in 1965 that were made for The Shadows. I still have the bill for it....£80.00!

Possibly, only Bruce himself could confirm it one way or the other! From that period, one of the few other TV appearances of a Telecaster I can think of is a performance of Willie and the Hand Jive, rather than the more familiar sunburst Jazzmaster that Bruce used at the time.

Four wound strings with paper in the nut, so no wonder why his strings sound dull and like flat-wounds...



That's why Cliff decided to send the 34346 along with the rosewood strats and bass to the painter to get their white coating.

I see there appears to be a fair amount of wear & tear on the Strat, & probably on the other two Fenders as well. Nitro lacquer quite quickly wears off , as I found with my vint. reissue '62 Tele ; only a few weeks. I guess with all the touring etc. that they were doing at the time, it wouldn't have taken long for the finishes to start wearing & flaking off. But that is a genuine relic finish from actual hard work.

When I saw the Shadows at the Paris Olympia in 1961, Bruce was playing a silmilar Tele, I saw it with my own eyes, while Hank was playing the red Strat and Jet a sunburst PB. All had unmiked Vox AC30.

Hi Tony,

Collectors and specialist in vintage called this kind of damage "coffin rash".
Just caused by friction during movement and taking out and putting the instrument in it's case.
When Fender maple neck instrument are very long transported in their original case and it's a tight one, you get even "coffin rash" on the fretboard end at the body.

There was a time Bruce couldn't recollect he used a tele....

Hi Bill,
I understand that Bruce (or maybe the Management) sold the Jazzmaster on to the Lead guitarist of The Hunters, Brian Parker, from Cheshunt (rings a bell) who had success with their instrumental 'The Storm' . He is visible with a Sunburst Jazzmaster on their EP cover. They were the backing band for Dave Sampson, as the Shads were for Cliff.
