... but that one has a rosewood neck and 3-ply scratchplate - curiouser and curiouser!

Anyone can make a mistake, even those charged with the job of dating photographs. But since other pictures from the same session show Licorice Locking, 1961 is not at all likely, whereas 1963 most certainly is.

When did Hank need to bandage his wrist?

OK I too have found a picture with Licorice & Brian with Hank with the bandage & white Strat, obviously from the same session, so that puts it at 1963.

A shame - I thought you may have had the answer there :( . I can only think that, as has already been suggested, it's a trick of the light. Certainly looks like a white Fender though.

Chas.

As a photographer of many years I can say you wouldn't get that much glare (which is basically a reflection) from any light source. Looks like a white body with a rosewood neck.

In the Me and My Shadows book it's captioned 'Waiting for the plane' in the South African tour section. I think if Cliff/The Shadows had had access to a white Strat in those early days we'd have heard about it before now! It's only a tiny photo; despite Martin's post I think it must have been flash reflection making 34346 appear to be white...

Or... it could be a guitar belonging to someone else?

A white custom coloured maple neck strat, with the same short tremelo arm as the 34346.....in the hands of that same group of people in South Africa at that same time period as the 34346 in possession of the same group , how are the odds of that?
At that time rosewood necks were the standard....so a other custom colour maple neck in SA is very rare, to say the least...
I find the lighting story more likely to be honest. ;)
