Shadows recordings from the BBC

Postby dave robinson » Mon Nov 18, 2019 1:55 am

I couldn't help noticing people talking about more recorded material from the BBC and I thought I'd mention a two CD set I found in a drawer today with exactly those tracks on them. There are thirty seven in total including the ones released that we recently purchased. I can't remember where I got these, but it's titled LIVE RADIO SHOWS FROM THE BBC (59-74) and is from Jonesy Records made in the E.E.C.
I can understand why the band didn't want the other tracks released as the recordings are below par by their standards, but I'm not judging them and am very pleased to hear them, it makes them sound human. ;)

These are from Belgium according to what it says on the discs, may have been bought when I was abroad in Tilberg or Verden, or maybe even in the UK at Pipeline or Shadowmania. I'm giving them a spin now. :)

Aha, so the tracks are out there. And you may have put your finger on why it’s all gone quiet on the BBC front!

I've had these for quite a few years though Iain. I'm struggling to remember where they were obtained.

A lot of tracks (variously from the BBC and Luxembourg, but frequently not distinguished) are "out there" and have been so for years.

However, many are in very poor condition, having been recorded off air to reel-to-reel via a crystal mike (often from medium wave, though the Light programme and Radio 2 were at one time on long wave, of course) and then copied from the original reel-to-reel tape then copied again and again for n generations.

Except for the later stuff transmitted in the era of VHF/FM and stereo cassette decks, quality is usually poor, with pronounced wow and flutter on some tracks, bits missing off others and a general lack of wide frequency response. The tapes reputedly in the hands of Rollercoaster will, by all accounts, be worth listening to, and perhaps even worth waiting for.

I've had this set for a long time as well and, similarly, I can't remember where I obtained it.

Recently Rob Bradford highlighted some incorrect annotations concerning broadcast dates on the new pressing of The Shadows Live at the BBC cd from Warner.

On this bootleg cd by Jonesey I note that the incorrect broadcast dates that Rob highlighted for LADY PENELOPE, SCOTCH ON THE SOCKS, JIGSAW, TENNESSEE WALTZ, BOMBAY DUCK, LARA’S THEME, SNAP CRACKLE & HOW’S YOUR DAD, THE WILD ROSES and NAUGHTY NIPPON NIGHTS (David Symonds) appear correctly on this cd. With that in mind I am now confused as to the correct date of the Sounds on Sunday broadcast which is stated on the Warner cd as 10-12-1973. On the Jonesey cd it is shown as 24-3-74. Would this be another recording/broadcast date error?

I used to have a VHF off-air recording of my own on reel-to-reel of that programme and could have answered the question had I not sold off my machines and the tapes several years ago!

The date 24. March 1974 is the correct one for the Sounds On Sunday broadcast in question.
