Blackpool recordings

Postby shadowriter » Sat Sep 21, 2019 3:38 pm

Just been reading the notes on Dance With The Shadows and
it mentions a few tracks being recorded at the Jubilee theatre
Blackpool. Can anyone expand on this?

Cheers

Thank's Ian, found that link. Great info, have to look up the Jubilee Theatre
now, I can't seem to place it at the moment.

I have personally always thought that the Blackpool recordings have the sound/ feel very close
to Abbey Road Recordings they did that year.
Assume the Jubilee Theatre had reasonably good recording facility, but maybe there was a bit of mixing/
balance with the tapes back at Abbey Road?

From what I've read, the recording facilities were quite primitive as compared to Abbey Road Studios at the time. Abbey Road were about to or had just installed 4-track recording equipment, while in Blackpool the group used 2-track recording equipment.

Has anyone any session details of the tracks recorded at The Jubilee Theater Blackpool in August 1963 ,some tracks with Cliff Richard were recorded there including What`ve I Gotta do from Wonderful Life as well as tracks from the EP When in France, also I think Shindig and Shazam could have been recorded there as well.

Take a look at my features on instrumentation of The Shadows' (and related) recordings: http://www.malcolmcampbell.me.uk/instrumentation-update/
And also the one about Cliff Richard & The Shadows' recordings: http://www.malcolmcampbell.me.uk/instrumentation-cliff-update/

Extracts from EMI's card-file archives at Hayes, arranged in Excel by Roberto Pistolesi, though completely dependent on the accuracy of the index cards:

Blue Shadows 1-Aug-63 The Shadows DWtS Jubilee Hall
Dakota 4-Aug-63 The Shadows DWtS Jubilee Hall
French Dressing 4-Aug-63 The Shadows DWtS Jubilee Hall
Boum 5-Aug-63 Cliff & The Shadows When In France EP Tk 10 Jubilee Hall
C'est Si Bon 5-Aug-63 Cliff & The Shadows When In France EP Take 12 Jubilee Hall
La Mer 5-Aug-63 Cliff & The Shadows When In France EP Tk 8 Jubilee Hall
J'Attendrai 6-Aug-63 Cliff & The Shadows When In France EP Tk 10 Jubilee Hall
Say You're Mine 6-Aug-63 Cliff & The Shadows B-side DB 7150 Jubilee Hall
What've I Gotta Do 9-Aug-63 Cliff & The Shadows Wonderful Life Tk 10 Jubilee Hall

Shindig was recorded on 1st September 1963, which was a Sunday. It is not listed as a Jubilee Hall track and sounds as though it has overdubs, not easy with the two-track equipment in use there. It was released in September, so it is possible that this was just a remix or similar and that it may well have been recorded some months earlier (which was more like the usual gap between recording and release).

Shazam! is listed as recorded on 1st November 1963 (a Friday). I think the Blackpool summer season was over by then. They were well into Illuminations season.

There is an overdub on Dakota. Does the card index reveal when and where that was done?
