that is a very fascinating detail. Thanks for bringing this post back to the top! I do wonder though why some instruments like that are used in studio recordings but never played live. I played in a band once where the producer of the original album added loads of strings etc to the recording and it sounded fab problem was we then had to try and replicate it in a 5 piece band and it never sounded right

I’m glad you found that bit of trivia interesting, Steve. Apache also has the sound of sticks or claves being strung together at the intro and outro, so one needs another person to do that. It’s fun to try to replicate the sound though. .

The clicking on the intro and outro is Tony tapping a stick against the rim of the snare (or maybe one stick against the other). Throughout the song, you never hear the clicking and the head of the snare being hit at the same time. Tony could only do one or the other. There was no overdubbing, which is why Cliff played the chinese drum.

I found this old video of one of our shows. Our Cliff-Richard-substitute Ethel is seen at the beginning, tucking a Chinese drum under her arm for Apache, as Cliff was said to have done at Abbey

We tried to use period-looking guitars, too. And also the thin leather straps that everyone used in the early 60s.

Best,

Andy

Recording a backing Track of Apache I used a "Tako Drum" in the Logic Software.
